I offer Spiritual Direction for people who are interested in deepening their relationship with God.
What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is a companioning relationship. It involves listening to a person’s concerns and bringing those concerns, together, to God in prayer, listening for His voice and guidance.
Spiritual Direction is an ancient practice which has had a resurgence in popularity in the last few decades. My training in spiritual direction is biblical, Trinitarian and contemplative in nature. My hope as a spiritual director is to provide a space for you to pay attention to how your faith is impacting your heart and mind and a space to invite God to speak into these thoughts and feelings about your life.
Spiritual Direction is help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship. (William A. Barry and William J. Connolly, The Practice of Spiritual Direction)
What should you expect?
In general, spiritual direction occurs on a monthly basis, and the meeting lasts for an hour. As the session begins, we will enter into silence and prayer. After a few moments of reflection, you will be invited to share what is on your heart, whether it is a concern, worry, relationship struggle, joy or some other question of faith. We will listen together prayerfully and allow time and space for the Holy Spirit to speak and guide.
What is your part?
Meeting with a spiritual director creates a time and space to reflect on what you have been noticing in your relationship with the Lord through your practice of spiritual disciplines.
In the days prior to your time of direction, pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, prayers, and the state of your heart. The Lord may highlight something that He would like you to explore. Any topic is worthy of exploring: areas of consolation or desolation, questions, doubts, and so forth. There is no topic which the Lord does not want to discuss with you!
We all go through times when our relationship with the Lord seems dry or we are not hearing much. You may simply bring up that sense as what we will pray through together.
What is my part?
I will be listening to you, praying with you, and listening to the Lord on your behalf during our time together. I may ask some clarifying questions. I like to think of my role as “setting the table” – the Lord will provide the feast!
During the time between our sessions, I will pray for you regularly. Your sessions will be confidential, however, and I will not pass along any of your concerns to others.
Compensation
As we are determining if we are a “good fit” for a spiritual direction relationship, we can discuss the fee per session. My desire is that finances not be a barrier. One approach to setting a fee is to base it on what the directee earns per hour of work. Another approach is to suggest a range of fees, and at this time, my suggested range is $30-$60 per session. Payment can be made in the form of cash, check or credit card at the time of our meeting. If finances are a concern, please let me know.
